| Question: | I have a Mitsubishi '91 Triton Ute,2.6L unleaded petrol, 4cyl, manual that has low k's (mileage) only done 106,000 kmh, but I've got an oil problem, using about 1 ltr every 500kmh.Blows blue smoke when first accelerate away & also at gear change? Could this be valve stem seals? or something more serious? cracked ring/s? Compression test came up within all tolerances?! Hope you can point me in the right direction, not sure whether to have just the head pulled down & serviced (which will be a waste of time/money) if the bottom end needs attention! thanx again Bernie |
| Answer: | Bernie, You're definately have the right idea for causing your blue smoke. It can be caused my worn or damaged valve stem seals, worn valve stem, piston ring worn or damaged, or even a clogged PCV valve. Typically, if your compression is within tolerance, your piston rings are probably ok. I've never worked on a Triton so I'm not familiar with that 2.6L engine. You're definately leaking a good deal of oil past your valve guides if you're going through a litre presumably every full tank of gas you go through. You may be looking at head work to remedy your problem. But try cheaper fixes first; replace your pcv valve and be sure to use at least a 10W-30 oil. If you're in a very warm climate, use 20W-50. Good luck |
