| Question: | 89 Mitsubishi Precis,
Manual Trans, 4 cyl OK...I have a no-start problem. Turn the key get "clicking" only. I've got a fully charged battery, Starter&solenoid that tests good, and a new ignition switch. I've also replaced the battery cables thinking I was getting a bad ground or somthing. Any suggestions? I'm curious if I'm missing a possible bad relay or somthing somewhere. I'm not real familiar with these Mitsubishi's. I also checked the "Plug-in" relay next to the battery...It seems fine. Help?!?!? Thanks for your time! |
| Answer: | Bob, I just had the same problem with one of my cars. I too would hear a 'click' when I turned the key, but the starter motor would never turn over. When the temperature was above freezing, my car would start up fine, and my starter tested good. Once it dipped below 20 degrees F, I'd get nothing. The old fashion way to get a possible bad starter to run is to hit it with a hammer. Not the best way to remedy the problem, but it can actually work and its free. If that method does actually work to get your car started, you definately have a bad starter. Since you hear the 'click' that is probably your starter relay working. A bad ground will defiantely prevent your starter from working. If there are a lot of deposites or rust on your starter connections, that could prevent suffient current from getting to the starter. The starters on Mitsusbishis are typically not easily accessible, but not impossible. If you do need to get a new starter, shop around. You shouldn't have to pay more than $100 for one. Good luck! |
