Subject: Oil in my distributor
Question: I have a 1994 Mazda MX-3, I heard that it was the same as a mitsubishi. The only problem I had with this car were my brakes which were just replaced and there is a little hole in the muffler that I am going to fix. But now I have a huge problem. The problem is that there is oil in my distributor and I was wondering if you had any idea what I could do.I was going to get another distributor but I don't want this to happen again. If it is fixable and maybe you could give me a rough estimate of how much it would cost.
Thanks a lot
Answer: Quanita,

The Mazda MX-3 really isn't at all like a Mitsubishi, but the problem you described can happen to any car. I'm not sure where the distributor is on the MX3, but the oil may be coming from your valve cover, oil cap, dipstick well, PCV valve, or even your drive shaft oil seal.

If its from your valve cover, you'll need to get a new gasket installed. The gasket is relatively cheap, but it could involve a couple hours of labor (not cheap).
If its your oil cap or dipstick, replace them. The rubber seal on those wear out over time and don't provide an adequate seal. Both of those are very cheap.
If its your PCV valve, have it replaced. Its not expensive, but does require maybe an hour of labor.
If its your drive shaft seal, those too are cheap parts, but its the most expensive procedure. Some oil seal replacements could take anywhere from 3-5 hours of labor.
Assume your mechanic's labor cost is around $65/hour

Definately get your oil leak fixed before you get a new distributor. You may even be able to salvage and clean your old distributor once you get that leak fixed.
Good luck!
