Subject: 4 wheel drive
Question: i have a 2001 montero sport xls. i am having problems when i try to engage the four-wheel drive it will not engage. sometimes the indicator light will flash and then go off and others the light will show that it is engaged but the anti-lock brake light will come on. is there any way that i can cleean the sensors so the four wheel drive will engage smoothly and stay engaged?
Answer: Luke,
Sorry for taking so long to reply. I'm not sure where the sensor is that recognizes that the 4WD has been engaged, but the contacts on the swtich itself may have a poor contact, or a bad ground (possible short circuit in the system). Being that it's a 2001, this may be covered by the warranty, since 4WD deals with the powertrain. I believe the powertrain warranty for that vehicle is up to 5 years. Check with the dealership against your warranty to see if you can get this resolved for free. Trying to remove and clean sensors can cause an even more serious failure if done improperly.
Good luck!
