| Subject: | Mitsubishi Montero engine races |
| Question: | I've got a 94 Mitsubishi Montero SR automatic with 213 ci. (don't know any repair history, sorry) When you first start it and it's in neutral the RPMs race from 2200 to 3000. Drivability is fine and it stops racing when you put it in drive. Can you help or refer me to a good place online? |
| Answer: | Susan, The colder the morning, the higher the RPMs will race when you first start your car. For a better test, drive your car around until the engine reaches normal operating temperature. Then, park your car, turn it off, then start it right back up again. The RPMs will rise high at first, but it should drop back down to around 1000 RPMs a few seconds later. If the RPMs stay high when in Park or in Neutral, even when the engine is warmed up, you most likely have an idle problem. Your idle may just need to be adjusted. It's possible your throttle cable may be stuck, your throttle position
sensor could be malfunctioning, your Idle Air Control motor may be faulty,
or you have a small leak in your intake system. If your car does not perform
the way I noted after the engine has warmed up, have a mechanic inspect
your air intake system. It may be a simple and cheap fix. |
