Subject: engine missing
Question: I have a 1991 mitsubishi mighty max truck. recently i had to have my transmission replaced. The day after it came out of the shop it began missing like the pluggs were/had gone bad. Today i replaced the sparkplugs but the problem remains. I realize this sounds stupid since the transmission has nothing to do with the engine but my vehicle didnt run like this before it went into that garage. Could my distributor or plug wires need replacing? i would also like to ask what the mechanics have to disconnect on the engine to get the transmission out. I'm starting to believe that the mechanic I used did more harm than good.
Answer: Rob,
True, having your tranny replaced shouldn't cause the problem you're having. But it wouldn't be uncommon for your mechanic to knock something loose. The only major electric component connected to you transmission is your starter. And if your car will start, you can obvious rule out a starter issue.
I will guess that there is a spark plug wire not fully seated on the distributor. If this the case, you may be getting arcing. This is very dangerous and could severaly electricute you. Wait until it gets really dark out, open your hood, start your engine and check to see if you notice any electrical arcs or "lightning" flashes near your distributor cap. It is also possible that your mechanic removed your spark plug wires from your distributor, and the replaced them in the wrong order. I would bring your truck back to that mechanic insist he get it back to normal.
Good luck!
