| Question: | Jumper cables I understand how to connect them...lets see first its connect the positive(red) to the bad battery and the positive end to my battery Lets say I'm helping someone here...then I connect the negative(blk) end to my battery then I connect the negative end to a metal surface on the person I am trying to help...Is this right so far...? Now do I have to start my car or is power already being transferred through the jumper cables? If the car doesn't start do I then turn my car own...ALso if my car is on is it safe to remove the cables while the cars are on and is there any particular order of removing the cables? Please help me clear this up Thank you much |
| Answer: | Edward,
So far you are correct. Make sure the cars are not touching while you are doing this. Power will already be flowing to the dead battery, but it can take a while if that battery is really drained. Start the car that's providing the jump start. Wait a moment, then try to start the car with the dead battery. If it does not start, stop trying and wait a few moments longer. Try again for no more than thirty seconds. If the car has not started by now, chances are that it's not going to. It'll be safe to remove the cables while your car is running. Just remove
them in the reverse order that you put them on. |
