Question:

hello and thank you verymuch anthony well i done the compression test on my 98 engine sohc it has 100900 miles and i know you helped me with this neon but i wanted to know more. i have seen some white smoke come out the pipe and i still have blue smoke to but after its wramed up it still has white puffs of smoke even after about 10 mins come out i dont know if its a head gasket or it needs to keep running or something but it only does it sometimes. and the compression test all 4 cylinders was the same on the first stroke it went up to 100 psi and after 4 or 5 it got up to 180 psi and i still got that ticking noise at start up and still a little when its warmed up but can barely hear it it might be the vavle lash adjuster dont know but need help bad and another thing i just got the car for 1500 and dont know anything else about it and i thank you very much

Answer: Timmy,
I'd still guess that ticking noise is due to the lifters (hydraulic lash adjusters). There's not much you can do for that except clean them, or find some compatible lifters that have larger oil passages. Mitsubishi started making lifters with larger oil passages in their 2000+ model engines. Many folks complained about the noise for more than 10 years before Mitsu did something about it.

Consistent white smoke would indicate a water leak into your combustion chamber. It's possible your head gasket is slightly warped and letting some water pass by. If that white smoke seems to have a sweet smell to it, then you are burning coolant. But if the white smoke disappears for the most part after the engine has warmed up, you should be fine. And those compression numbers you found seem right on for factory spec.

Blue smoke usually means oil is being burned off in your combustion chamber. That usually happens with worn piston rings, worn valve seals and/or worn valve guides. As cars get older, there seals will wear and oil can seep past and burn away. If you wanted to take care of that, that would require a head rebuild with new valve guides and seals. Again, since your compression looks good, I doubt there is any real damage to internal engine components, but a head rebuild would be something to consider if you consistently go through more than a quart of oil every 1,000 miles.
Good luck!
