Question: I forgot to tell you my car is a 1999 Mitsubishi mirage. I'm sorry i miss telling you that. What could of caused a leak in a hose? or the exhaust to crack? thank you for responding. Also to change the converter do the o2senser have to be taken of and plug into the new converter? Just asking so I will know if they could see it when they replace the converter?-------------------------
Answer: Dawn,
Thanks for the updated information. Since you have a 1999 model, I doubt you have a cracked manifold. A leak in an intake house is more common. There are small metal hose clamps that can rust away, or loose their grip which can cause a problem with the seal they make. That's typical of a vacuum leak. Before having the catalytic converter changed, have them hook your car up to a diagnostic machine to check for malfunctioning O2 sensors. Your car's computer will know if the O2 sensors are faulty. If your rear O2 sensor is functioning properly, you can use it in a new catalytic converter if you need one. If you have a mechanic that has decent equipment, he should be able to check if your catalytic converter is indeed bad as well. The O2 sensor may plug into the exhaust pipe that's right before the cat. converter. I'm not that familiar with the '99 Mirage, but your mechanic should not a have problem with it if it needs to be replaced.
Good luck!
