| Subject: | 96 Mirage S stalling |
| Question: |
Hi, I have a 1996 Mitsubishi Mirage S 1.5 SOHC. It has 166000 miles.
I have not driven it more than 100 miles in the past 5 years. When my
main car broke down recently I started driving it. On the second day of
driving it, the car started stalling at stop lights. It also suffers from
a loss of power when pressing the gas. Now when I start it, I have to
keep my foot on the gas pedal slightly for close to 15 minutes for the
engine to stay on. Even then, the car loses power and will turn off if
the gas pedal is pressed down moderately. I had the plugs/wires and fuel
filter replaced since this has happened. After the fuel pump was replaced
the car seemed to run fine at first, then started stalling. What could
this be? I appreciate any help! I believe it may be the fuel pump or fuel
relay. What do you think? |
| Answer: | Burly, Have the charging system inspected. This is mainly incorporates the battery and alternator. If their (or both) are not performing nominally, then you will experience loss of power and/or stalling. It's not uncommon for batteries to fail when they really get used (charged and discharged regularly like during normal driving). And when the battery begins to fail, it can also cause the alternator to fail as well. Have those items checked and replaced if necessary. Good luck! |
