Subject: Mirage 2001
Question: I need an opinion on what you think might be the problem. My car seems to be struggling alot lately, especially at high speeds. The gears switch fine but I have less power and my engine (?? not sure if it is engine) seems to be pulling. I'm also using up more gas. I have a Mirage 2001, 40K, just serviced. Friend suggested that I needed to get the transmission serviced. What do you think might be the problem?
Answer: Theresa,
I don't think your transmission is at fault. A malfunctioning transmission will not cause your poor gas mileage. I'm not sure what you had serviced recently, but since you rolled past the 40k mark, here is a list of items you should have replaced:

- Spark plugs and plug wires
- Fuel filter
- Air filter
- engine oil and oil filter change
- transmission oil change and filter cleaning
- PCV valve
- Timing belt (usually replaced every 60k miles, but may help you)

Have your intake and exhaust system checked for any vacuum leaks. Also, your oxygen sensor may be fouled. Have that inspected as well.

Anything I listed that you haven't serviced yet, you should do them now. Most likely, that will fix your problem.
Good luck!
