| Subject: | Basic "won't crank" question |
| Question: | Very car repair illiterate. My daughter's '96 Mitsubishi Mirage died on her (luckily in the driveway). It coasted to a stop. The battery seems strong in that the lights/radio, etc. are strong. The engine will turn over easily, but won't crank. What are the possible and likely causes? Is this potentially a fuel pump problem? (all I could think of). Like I said...very enept with car repair so this is probably more simplistic than you're used to getting. |
| Answer: | Danny, Your explaination was just fine. Many times I can't even understand what someone is asking ;) Anyway, you could be correct to assume a fuel pump problem. Another common problem could be a clogged fuel filter. Many people think that the oil filter is the only filter that needs regular changing, but that's only one critical filter. Every 12 months or so, you will want to replace your fuel filter and air filter. When you have your fuel filter replaced, ask your mechanic to replace your PCV valve as well. I won't get into explaining exactly what it is or what it does, but its critical for your engine to run properly. A PCV valve is very inexpensive and simple for any mechanic to replace. If the car was driveable at all, I'd recommend taking it to an AutoZone if you have one in your area. They have code readers that they can plug into your car's computer which will tell you exactly what's wrong. AutoZone will do this for free. But if it won't start, take it to a mechanic and request a full tune up. Make sure they replace the air and fuel filters, the PCV valve, and have them inspect the fuel pump. That should fix your problem. Good luck! |
