Subject: replacing engine mount
Question:

['90 Mitsubishi Mirage, 4-door sedan, automatic]

Would it be possible for me to replace all 3 of the engine mounts on my Mirage myself? I have a 275-piece mechanic's tool set and experience in using them, but I do not know if that will be enough. What is your opinion?

Sincerely,
Arian I.

Answer: Arian,
A 275 piece set should be adequate. I believe you need 17mm and 19mm sockets and a 1/2" drive ratchet. It's also a good idea to have the same sizes of box wrenches. If your set does not include those exact sizes, you can get those specific sizes at any hardware or store with an automotive section. A breaker bar may be helpful, but not required.

You'll also want to have a good floor jack. You'll need to lift the engine up slightly to take the weight off the mounts. So, if you have a very good service manual (I recommend the factory service manual), plenty of time, and strength, you should be able to do this job. If your nuts and bolts are pretty rusty, go get yourself a couple cans of PB Blaster. PB Blaster is a GREAT penetrating oil that helps loosen stubborn bolts. Most mechanics I know use it. If some nuts are REAL tight and PB Blaster doesn't help, you may need a propane torch to heat them up enough to be able to remove them.
Good luck!
