| Subject: | my horn is stuck |
| Question: | i have a 2001 mirage and a couple months ago the when i turned on the car the horn went off by itself. if kept going until i hit the wheel then it stopped after a couple more months it did it again but now it won't stop. i had to pull out the fuse. the dealership said it was the air bag and it would cost 800 dollars to replace it. what is your advise and is the air bag and horn replacement some that can be done easily at home. |
| Answer: | Chad, A 2001 Mirage has a 3 year/36,000 mile warranty. Unless you've gone over 36,000 miles or did something else that would void your warranty, I can't imagine why your dealership wouldn't cover this under your warranty. If you feel you are still within warranty, you can contact a lawyer to verify that you can get this replacement for free. The service required to install a new air bag is definately not something
you want to try at home. If you do anything wrong, you could have your
air bag deploy when you hit a pothole. Also, you would probably void whatever
remains of your warranty if you didn't have a dealership do it. Air bag
replacement is expensive, but $800 seems excessive; even for a dealership
to charge. Check with another Mitsubishi dealership in your area for other
estimates. You could even take your car to a local garage for an estimate.
You may find its not your air bag at all. Dealerships love to try to charge
you for the most expensive job possible. Air bag replacement is one of
them. |
