Subject: 1991 Mitsubishi Mirage with starting problems
Question: My Mirage with 1.5L will not start, and when attempting to there is a very strong odor of raw gas (it floods out whenever I try to start it). I have recently replaced the distributor, ignition switch, air filter, spark plugs and wires, and even put in a new engine (it had a bad cylinder). The only thing I can come up with is that it is something in the electronics and I don't have any idea what it may be or how to test it.
Answer:

Chad,
It does definately sound like its flooding from your description. You've replaced most of the major items that can cause flooding (the engine being the big item!). Have you checked your fuel pump and fuel filter? The pump in particular; its possible it shorted out, and even if the car is turned off, it may be trying to supply fuel to your injectors. That's rare, but not unheard of. If your engine is completely turned off and you hear a whining noise from your trunk, it could be your pump.

But a short could be caused by a electrical problem you hinted at. Its not easy to test yourself, but you may want to have your ECU (car's computer) tested by a qualified technician. It could be receiving an incorrect signal from your accelerator pedal and throttle cable, which will inturn tell your fuel pump to deliver more fuel than necessary. It'll be a good idea to have your entire fuel deliver system checked at the same time. That'll include your pump, filter, lines, rail, and injectors; and that's just name a major parts.

If you decide to check your fuel system yourself, be real careful. I'm sure you know how dangerous gasoline is, but the vapors are just as deadly. I've seen too many car fires not to mention it even the most experienced person.

Hope I was able to add some helpful ideas. Good luck!
