Subject: Brake repair
Question: I have a 2002 Mitsubishi Lancer, the front right brake has started to grind metal.
What do I need other than brake pads, to install new pads?
What should I know before I do the repair myself?
I would appreciate any help you can give me.
Thank You,
Sam Panetti
Answer: Sam,
First thing I would do would be to call or visit your local Mitsubishi dealership. I will guess your car is still under warranty, and unless you're doing a LOT of hard braking, your brake pad should not be scraping metal already. You may be able to have your pads replaced for free.

If your pads did wear down all the way to the metal on just the right side, there may be a problem with your caliper. You should check both the right and the left pads. If everything is working properly, all pads on the front brakes should have even wear on them. If one side is replaced, typically the other side should be replaced too. You should remove the rotors as well to see if they've been warped or scored badly from the heat build up.

Replacing brakes pads is pretty easy and straight forward, but you need to be aware of ALL your brakes to be safe. But your best bet is to first have a dealership check out the brakes to make sure there isn't a bigger problem. It should be a free fix.
Good luck!
