Subject: 2002 Mitsubishi lancer timing belt
Question:

my 2002 lancer timing belt broke i know it is an interferance engine but i am hopeing for the best but i can't find any info on where the timing marks should be placed

Answer: Chris,
If your belt broke, then all your timing marks would be out of synch. So even if you knew where the timing marks were, you'd have a very difficult time setting them properly. Timing marks are typically on the cam shaft sprockets, crankshaft sprocket, oil pump sprocket and balance shaft sprocket. You should do a compression test on the engine to see if you bent any valves or caused other internal damage. If the compression test fails, you should avoid attempting a timing belt replacement until you get the head repaired. With the head off, you can see the #1 piston and set it to top-dead-center by rotating the crankshaft clockwise. Once the #1 piston is at TDC, you can then align your timing marks properly. It's a pretty big job, and if you don't think you can tackle it, have the car brought to a mechanic.
Good luck!
