| Subject: | check engine light |
| Question: |
I have a 1995 lancer gli cyclone engine , not sure but believe is 1.3. Trouble first began when one night check engine light came on and car would not idle, would run ok, only no idle. As i am here in Cebu philippines hard to find expert mechanic , but took my car to local mech. and he got my car to idle but check engine light stayed on , but car ran strong.I took my car to the mitsubishi dealer to see what the problem with the light is and they said I need a servo kit, throttle for the fuel injection , but wanted an absorbent price to repair as my car was running strong I have just ignored the light , but now car is beginning to lose what looks like electrical power as I am driving and for a second or two radio and power and everything dies , but then begins running strong again , I don't see how the injection system could cause electrical power but then I am no expert, please let me know your advice . Thanks James |
| Answer: | James, I really do not know much about those older Lancers since they were not sold in the United States, and I've never had the opportunity to work on them. But your electrical power cutting out sounds like a possible alternator
problem. If your car is still using the original alternator, chances are
it may need to be replaced. Most any mechanic can check that. It's also
a good idea to make sure your battery is charging properly. Check for
corrosion on the battery cables and battery terminals. Intermittent power
loss many times is caused by poor contact at the battery connections.
Also, by disconnecting your negative battery cable for a couple minutes
and reattaching it, that will reset your check engine light. If the light
comes back on after doing that, your car's computer is still detecting
a problem somewhere; most likely in the emissions system or ignition system.
Even a single spark plug misfire can cause the check engine light to come
on. Check those areas and hopefully you'll find your problem. |
