| Subject: | Oil signal on my dashboard |
| Question: | I have mitsubishi lancer
(GL, 1990, 1500cc), and my car keep give me oil sign signal on my dash board.
I've change the engine oil and also flush and change radiator coolent. this problem occurs everytime i drive my car more than 10 minutes. I suspect i got the problem with my engine that over heated after 10 minutes drive. Could you please tell what should I do?? |
| Answer: | Hery, Your engine will definately overheat due to lack of oil. And, your oil can burn away due to lack of coolent. If you're buring a lot of oil, you'll notice bluish smoke coming from your exhaust. Check for oil leaks on and under your engine. If you have lots of oil on your engine, you could have a bad oil cap, dipstick, or clogged PCV valve. If you see oil leaking on to the ground around your car, you could have gasket leak, or drive shaft seal leak, or your oil drain plug may not be sealing properly. Keep an eye on your oil level. If it continues to overheat, but your oil level remains constant, you may have a dead oil pump, your relief valve may be stuck open, and/or you could have a clogged oil filter housing. I'm assuming you changed your oil filter when you changed your oil. Usually, after 10 minutes of driving, your theormostat will open, allowing coolent to flow through your entire engine. If the theormostat is stuck closed, your coolent will not flow and your engine will overheat. Also, air bubbles trapped in your coolent lines will prevent the coolent from pressurizing enough to flow through your system. I would suggest having your oil pump and oil pressure sensor checked. If your engine is not receiving enough oil pressure, that light will definately stay on. Good luck! |
