Subject: TAILLIGHT
Question: I have a 97 Mitsubishi Galant Auto. My fuse for the taillights keeps on burning out, shortly after I turn on the headlights. If I unplug one of the rear lights, it doesn't matter which side, it will not burn out. Also, the dashboard lights will only work when the break is applied, but i believe that is just a warning that the taillight is not wokring. I tried replacing the bulbs it still will burnt he fuse shortly after. What is wrong? I have had nothing installed recently and it was working fine earlier that day.
Answer: Jen,
Sounds like you have a bad ground or a short circuit in your braking system. This typically occurs if there is a poor connection leading from your fuse to your brake lights, or even from a fraid wire. The best thing to do is double check the wattage you're using for the bulds, and also be sure you're using the correct rated fuse. If you've already confirmed everything is correct, you'll want to have your electrical system inspected by a trained technician. A non-functional brake light bad enough, but you don't want to compound that with a possible electrical fire if you have a fraid wire somewhere.
Good luck!
