Subject: Galant click
Question: Dear Anthony, when I coil my Galant's steering wheel all the way to the right, I hear a clicking noise that increases or decreases in frequency with the speed the car is moving. I believe it to be a CV joint, am I right? It only happens when I turn the steering completely. How bad is this? Thanks in advance.
Regards,
Richard
Answer: Richard,
You are right. Most likely, you have a bad CV joint. They go bad when the CV boot around the joint tears and all the grease leaks out. When there's no grease on the joint, the joint will not get properly lubricated. Also, the grease helps keep out water and debris from getting to the joint. That will ruin your joint quickly. Unfortunately, it's not an inexpensive fix. Most garages will opt to replace the entire axle because it's easier than just replacing the joint. And on some models of Galant, I believe that is the only way to replace the joint is to replace the axle. Call around to different garages and get estimates for replacing your CV joint. You may save a few bucks by shopping around.
Good luck!
