| Subject: | transmission fluid |
| Question: | 2001 Mitsubishi Galant,
3.0L, ES V6, automatic It has become time for me to flush out my transmission and replace the fluid. I had a Mitsubishi Dealer tell me the only transmission fluid that is acceptible for my vehicle can be obtained at a Mitsubishi Dealorship for a value of $100. My questions to you: Is there really a specialized fluid that is only available at the dealorship or can obtain transmission fluid from an autoparts store that will not harm the transmission? |
| Answer: | Casey, Check your owners manual. It will tell you exactly the type of transmission fluid you will need. It'll probably list something like 'SAE approved Dexron-II or better'. They'll refer to it as ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid). $100 for transmission fluid is insane. Even if that also includes
the labor to change the fluid, that is way too expensive.
Take your owners manual with you to an auto parts store and
check the different ATF and compare it to what you need.
For my automatic transmission car, I always buy a full synthetic
ATF Dexron III. But check your owners manual to be safe.
That will have all the information about the required fluid
that the Mitsubishi dealership has. |
