Subject: Right Front Axle Shaft
Question: I am changing the right front bearing hub on a 2000 Mitz Galant. I have run into a problem . The axle shaft wont push out of the hub. I am an experienced mechanic and have changed half shafts & hubs on different vehicles. Havnt worked on any Mitz's and am wondering if this is a typicle problem. I have tryed to push the shaft through with a claw puller. Also tryed to drive it out with a air hammer. Any ideas or thoughts would be great. Thanks
Answer: Larry,
I have removed a few half shafts and axles myself on older Galants but not on anything as new as yours. Those older ones always gave me problems, but I was usually able to remove hubs with a pair of gear pullers. If you were unable to remove yours with claw pullers and an air hammer, they must really be seized on there. I've checked my factory service manuals (again, not for 2000 or newer models) and they all recommend using gear pullers to seperate the hubs from the drive shafts. I have been in your situation where I just couldn't budge it, but fortunately for me, I had a friend with a hydralic press, and he was able to break it free.

You are experienced and done this job before, but unfortunately I don't have any secret tips for you for a Mitsubishi. They are as typical as any other Japanese car. I would keep at it with the air hammer and use a lot of PB Blaster penetrating oil. That stuff is much better than WD-40 or LiquidWrench.
Good luck!
