Subject: HC Compressor
Question:

I own a 95 Mitsubishi Galant (standard transmission). I am noticing a metallic fan sound while the car is idling. My mechanic says it's the HC compressor. Can you tell me what the HC compressor is/does?

Answer: Chris,
I'm not sure if your mechanic doesn't know what he's doing, or you miss heard him, or both. I've never heard of a HC compressor. But I do know what an A/C compressor is. Your A/C compressor is used to turn your refridgerant gas into a fluid, with has a cooling effect, and that cools down your car when you turn on your air conditioner.
So, unless you live in a very warm place and your air conditioner was turned on when the mechanic was inspecting your car, its not your A/C compressor. Its possible that it may be your alternator fan. I would take your car to another mechanic to get a second opinion. Sometimes, I will go to 3 or more mechanics for several diagnosis if I can't figure out the problem myself. It can save you hundreds of dollars.
Good luck!
