| Subject: | Automatic Transmission |
| Question: | Maybe you can help, I drive a 94 Galant, 4 cylinder, with about 82,000 miles. Lately , when crusing at 65MPH, the tachometer has been reading around 3,000+ RPM when it used to read about 2600 RPM. There is no slipping and the transmission was designed with "fuzzy logic". I took it to my dealer who checked it with his electronic diagnostics but couldn't find anything wrong. The transmission fluid was completely changed but reamins the same. Any ideas? thanks. |
| Answer: | Fred, If your tranny has a manual overdrive switch, the solenoid that controls the overdrive may be malfunctioning and is now stuck open. When your overdrive is off, your RPMs will defiantely be higher. I doubt any electronic diagnostic code reader would detect any problem since having the overdrive turned off is a problems. The only "problem" is that your gas efficiency will drop at high speeds. Aside from an overdrive problem, there isn't much I can think of that would cause that. One possibilty it that you have a worn CV joint, and your axle is slipping at higher speeds. It can't hurt to check. If none of the above suggestions help, there is one more thing. And
its a common thing that's over looked by most mechanics. You can
read about it here: The closer your car get to be 10 years old, the more likely this may
become a problem. |
