Subject: Automatic Transmission
Question: Maybe you can help, I drive a 94 Galant, 4 cylinder, with about 82,000 miles. Lately , when crusing at 65MPH, the tachometer has been reading around 3,000+ RPM when it used to read about 2600 RPM. There is no slipping and the transmission was designed with "fuzzy logic". I took it to my dealer who checked it with his electronic diagnostics but couldn't find anything wrong. The transmission fluid was completely changed but reamins the same. Any ideas? thanks.
Answer: Fred,
If your tranny has a manual overdrive switch, the solenoid that controls the overdrive may be malfunctioning and is now stuck open. When your overdrive is off, your RPMs will defiantely be higher. I doubt any electronic diagnostic code reader would detect any problem since having the overdrive turned off is a problems. The only "problem" is that your gas efficiency will drop at high speeds.

Aside from an overdrive problem, there isn't much I can think of that would cause that. One possibilty it that you have a worn CV joint, and your axle is slipping at higher speeds. It can't hurt to check.

If none of the above suggestions help, there is one more thing. And its a common thing that's over looked by most mechanics. You can read about it here:

The closer your car get to be 10 years old, the more likely this may become a problem.
Good luck!
