You may want to get a second opinion from another mechanic. Your problem may simply be a short in circuit or stuck relay. I'm not sure what your mechanic may be referring to as the whole unit, and if he didn't explain it thorough to you, that's another reason why you should seek out the opinion of another mechanic.
