| Subject: | Galant Oil Filter -- Follow-up |
| Question: | I purchased a Mitsubishi tranny filter and replaced it..the wrong one was on for about 100 miles. Yes I never replaced the oil filter and will do another oil change and find the oil filter and replace it. I should be ok to replace the tranny fluid only since the tranny filter is mounted upside down and drains fully when the car is at rest for a while. I it a big job to replace the tranny fluid myself , on this car? |
| Answer: | Frank, As long as you have couple of good metric open-ended wrenches and/or ratchet sockets, you should have no real problem changing the tranny fluid. Just be sure to have the car on a level surface when filling it. Also, when you drain the exisiting fluid, make sure it is warm. Drive the car at least 5-15 miles first, then drain it as quickly as possible. Warm tranny fluid is better for removing sludge and dirt build up in your tranny case. Tranny fluid is MUCH thicker than regular engine oil and can literally be like molasses when it gets cool. Let the fluid drain out for at least an hour before refilling it. If you really want to do a thorough job, and you have an air compressor or high-powered shop vac, pump a lot of air down the tranny dipstick well to push out as much fluid as possible. Few people perform this step, but if you have the tools why not. Good luck! |
