Thanks, Rob F
Answer: Rob,
This is a pretty general question. Lots of things can cause a rattling sound. There really isn't too many things that can rattle near the "upper back" part of the engine. Check for any loose cables or wires. It could be a throttle cable or electrical connector. Check your windshield wipers and windshield wiper spray nozzles. They can come loose over time.
Sound and vibrations can travel pretty easy in an engine compartment. You could have a worn motor mount, which could cause several things to rattle. I'd recommend running your engine, open your hood and try to pin-point exactly where the sound is coming from. If you feel its causing problems with the way the car performs, take your car to a mechanic to have it checked.
Good luck!
