| Subject: | Timing Belt Problem |
| Question: |
1995 Eclipse GS Non-Turbo, 127,000 miles. Car ran well but was leaking oil from head gasket. Replaced gasket, head bolts, water pump, idler and tension pulleys. I have the factory shop manual and Chiltons. Problem lining up timing belt. Lined up both Cams, moved crank to 1/2 notch BTDC. Put belt on crank, water pump, idler, front cam, rear cam, and tensioner pulley. Moved crank to TDC, tensioned the belt to 23 ft pounds, tightened tensioner and removed pin. Rotated crank two revolutions. With crank at TDC, rear cam is 1 tooth behind mark. Have done this several times with no luck. An I missing something or is there a trick to doing this? |
| Answer: | Peter, Sounds like you did everything by the book. There really is no tricks for installing the timing belt on the 2.0L non-turbo engines. But if you'd like to see another reference, you can look here: http://vfaq.com/mods/timingbelt-2G-NT.html Here's another helpful site for you: The www.vfaq.com has a lot of good information for DSMs. Most info is
for turbo models, but you should be able to find good info for your NT
engine. The www.2gnt.com site is completely devoted to 2nd generation
non-turbo Eclipses. |
