Subject: 91 Talon with Mitsubishi 2.4L w/16vOHcam
Question: Thanks for the quick reply. You're right. Its a 4 cyl 2.0L with dual OH cam. My question is, the clacking got really loud over a days time, and is really loud. Embarassing, sounds like a coffee grinder. Does this mean the oil passages are clogged? And if so, How do I unclog them or insure that oil is getting to them. I looked inside the oil filler and it didn't appear as though there was wet oil inside while it was running. Will Synthetic oil work its way through the passages. There is 90lbs of oil pressure. Thanks again for your help.
Answer: Rich,
If the noise really does sound more like a "coffee grinder" than it does of clacking, then there might be a different problem. Your problem may be that your balance belt has slipped or snapped off. That will cause a horrible noise, and will cause your acceleration to drop. If your timing belt and balance belt have not been changed in more than 45,000 miles, then this is the perfect time to do it. Also, if your water pump has never been changed, it should be replaced when the timing belt and balance belts are changed.

Regardless if the lifters are the problem or it's your belts, using a synthetic oil will keep your engine running for a long time.
Good luck!
