| Subject: | alternator belt keeps breaking!! |
| Question: | Dear sir,i have a 91 mitsubishi eclipse 2.0l manual,gs model, the alternator belt makes a squealing noise then i smell smoke then it breaks,i have replaced the alternator and had the tension adjusted correctly and still it does the same thing, especially in cold weather when i'm going to work in the mornings,i tried everything, also i noticed that the power steering does'nt work when the belt breaks, but it has a seperate belt from the alternator, but the power steering belt never breaks at all. Please help!!I've tried everything that i could think of.Thanks!! |
| Answer: | Mark, The power steering pump is driven off the water pump (that is driven off the alternator belt). If the alternator belt slipped, check the crank pulley (check if the outer pulley separated from the hub by hand, then start the engine and see if the crank pulley is wobbling). If the crank pulley is all right, check the adjustment bracket of the alternator, put the belt back on and set correct tension on it. If the crank shaft pulley not mechanically sound, the belt can slip
excessively, it'll build up friction and wear prematurely; which can eventually
lead to the alt. belt breaking. |
