This car randomly cuts off while i drive it. I have rebuilt the engine (new gaskets, belts, etc.) and checked out the electrical. Since i cannot hear the fuel pump engage when I turn the key, I am going to try changing that next.

The problem I am having is draining the fuel tank. The siphon I bought (a six foot tube) won't reach the tank from the filling hole. Is there any other way to drain it? Do I even need to drain it? The only thing I can think of is to leave it running - well, for as long as it will run.

Thanks for any support you can give me. 3/4 of a tank and its running as I type.

You do not need to completely drain the tank in order to safely replace the fuel pump. Just be sure you are below 3/4 tank, preferably 1/2 tank, or you may have a LOT of fuel everywhere when you open up the tank.
Always have a fire extinguisher near by when dealing with the fuel system.
