| Subject: | Crankshaft bolt removal |
| Question: | I have a 1992 4G63 2.0L
DOHC engine and need to replace the silent shaft belt but cannot get the
crankshaft bolt off to put the belt on. First is it a normal or reverse
thread. I have tried with it in gear to hold the crankshaft, I have broken
two 3/16 inch steel bars bolted to the cranhshaft pully holes and to the
frame to prevent it from spinning while trying to remove the bolt. I have
no idea what to try next other than a tourch to heat it. The bolt is 17mm
and has a 1/2 inch square hole to rotate the cgankshsft. There is no seperate bolt as described in the manual. |
| Answer: | David, The threads are normal. Loosening"can be" really easy: -Put a 1/2" breaker bar in the end of the crank sprocket bolt -Place the bar up against the axle (to the rear of the axle) -Remove the MPI fuse (near the battery) so the car won't start -Bump the starter (very quickly, it only takes a second) Tightening the crank sprocket bolt is a whole different matter. You have
to put 80+ ft-lbs of torque on it, and when you go to tighten it, the
engine will rotate (NOT what you want to happen while the timing belt
is off). If you have an airwrench, and trust the torque settings, you
are set. Sorry for taking so long to respond. |
