Subject: backup lights
Question: My girlfriend has a 1999 eclipse 2.0.
Her back up lights will not work. I have checked them both and they are not burned out and I have checked all the fuses. I pulled center console and checked the gearshift as some older cars had a lever that the stick pushed as it went into reverse. Did not see anything like that.
Any help would be most appreciated.
Thanks
Answer: Eric,
Most cars now adays have a connector on the transmission that sends a signal to your backup lights when the car is in reverse. On manual transmissions, it is typically the only electrical connection that goes to the transmission. Check that connnection and make sure it is secure and that none of the wires are fraid to cause a short. Also, if you can get to it, inspect the wires that lead to the backup lights in the rear bumper. A connection may have become rusty and lost its connectivity.
Good luck!
