Question: Is it a big hastle to put a turbo on a non-turbo 1st gen. eclipse? I have been wanting to put a cold air intake and an intercooler and stuff. Any suggestons? I want to pep it up so to speak.
Answer: Caleb,
Slapping a turbo onto an non-turbo (NT) engine can be relatively simple if you buy a very expensive turbo kit. They can be anywhere from $900-$2000. And even when you have your turbo on your non-turbo engine, you will prematurely wear down your engine. The NT engine has weaker rods, pistons, and does not have the special knock sensor and oil jets that the standard turbo engines come with. And with all that extra power, you'll eventually want to stiffen up your suspension; that's a lot more money. Plus, with all the extra air entering your engine, you'll want a speedier fuel pump, which may also require a secondary computer to control the air/fuel mixture. Once again... that'll cost you even more money.

If you really want to pep up your car, it would be cheaper to sell your NT engine and purchase a rebuilt turbo engine and drop it in. In the long run, that'll be the cheaper option. If you just want to slap on a used turbo, exhaust manifold, with an intercooler and piping, you will see a signifigant increase in power, but expect to see more problems in the long run.
Good luck!
