| Subject: | Bent valves |
| Question: | I have a 1990 eclipse
with a 2.0 dohc enging ( not turbo ). The timing belt broke and the
intake valves kissed the pistons leaving two dents in each one. Is
there any way to tell if damage was done to the pistons, rods, or anything
below. I would like to replace the valves and put it back together.
What are my chances of having a running car when I get it back together.
Advice needed. Thanks |
| Answer: | Tim, You'll want to do a compression check. If your pistons are damaged, your compression will be low if you have any compression at all. If you plan on doing all the head work yourself, you will definitely want a factory service manual. You can usually find them pretty cheap on eBay. Any Mitsubishi Eclipse factory service manual between 90-94 will work. When you remove the head, you should send it to a machine shop to have it resurfaced. You will save a lot of money in labor, but will spend a lot in parts. You might as well replace all the valves while you're at it. If you follow all factory instructions and not try to cut any corners, you should be able get your car up and running again. Just be patient and take your time. This is like heart surgery for a car. Good luck! |
