Subject: balance shaft adjustment
Question: I have a 93 Eagle Talon 2.0L TSI ,manual I just had the timing belts replaced, the car now has a strange vibration in between 3K and 4K,from other websights I've read it sounds like my balane shaft is out of phase. I had my mechanic look at the car he said all the marks were right on. My question is, can the balance shaft be out of phase and the marks stiil be on, and if it can how do you get the balance shaft back in phase. I checked the v-facts at the club dsm websight but the t.s.b. is alittle bit vag for my mechanic. thanks,
James
Answer: James,
Most mechanics will screw up when replacing a balance shaft belt. The vibration you described it most definitely evident of a balance belt that was installed improperly. To answer your question, yes. Even if all the timing marks are right on, your balance shaft could still be out of phase. The VFAQ.com web page has a very detailed instructions on replacing all belts. If you can, print out the VFAQ for timing/balance shaft belt replacement and give the instructions to your mechanic. The only way to get the balance shaft back to phase is to reinstall the belt correctly. That's the last thing your mechanic will want to hear, but that's what he'll have to do.
Good luck!
