| Question: | i have a 92 mitsubishi
eclipse 2.0 gs dohc 16 valve non-turbo fwd. i was driving down the
highway and i had noticed my temp gauge had sky rocketed up. so i slowed
down and the temp. went down. I tried to accelerate after that and
it would not go any faster. i pulled over and turned my car off, waited
a few minutes and then tried to start it and it wouldnt start. it sounded
like it wanted to turn over but it just wouldnt go. im not to sure
whats wrong because i just got it. It sounds like a timing belt but
why would it overheat? OH, my oil was all gone too, so i refilled it
but it didnt leak out!? im stumped! PLEASE HELP!!?? |
| Answer: | Josh, Your engine will for sure overheat without adequate oil. Make sure all your coolant didnt burn off as well. You may be burning oil, and you would not notice any leaking if that were the case. On the older Eclipses, the valve cover gasket will leak over time. You will not notice oil leaking from it when you fill it with oil. The car must be running. Wosrt case scenerio is that your pistons melted and are fused to your engine block. If that's the case, you'll need a whole new engine. But let's try not to think that's the problem. When your car gets that hot, you may have fried out your spark plugs
or plug wires. I'd have a qualified mechanic look your car over and
check to see if it's burning oil, and give it a good tune-up if it
needs it. |
