| Subject: | Removing transmission. |
| Question: | Hi Anthony I have a 1993 MITSUBISHI ECLIPSE 4 Cylinders 01755 B 1.8L MFI SOHC. The transmission is grinding, making a lot of noise and not pulling. The clutch is working fine. So I assume it is stripped gears. Do I have to remove the entire engine or can I just take out the trans? I am not an expert, but I have done a lot of work on cars. I believe I can take it apart and replace the faulty gears. What do you advise? Thanks Dan |
| Answer: | Dan, You do not have to remove the entire engine to remove your tranny. I would HIGHLY recommed you have at least two good service manuals for references. Or, if you can get a factory service manual, that should be all you need. Also, make sure you have a very good set of tools, time, money, and having a friend help out can make the job a bit easier. You can do this job in your driveway/garage, but it would be much easier to do this job on a regular car lift. So, if you feel you're up to it, you could probably tackle this
job. If you want to play it a little safer, you could buy a rebuilt
transmission (which would already have upgraded gears, synchros,
etc. and would be all greased up), then you could just remove your
old tranny then hook up the rebuilt one. In all honesty, it would
probably be cheaper, and much less aggravating to get a rebuilt one. |
