| Subject: | Full speed, and car dies? |
| Question: | 95 Eclipse GS DOHC
5spd. At first I would be driving at any RPM at any time, anywhere..hot or cold and the car would cut out RPM directly to zero as if I had shut it off. At high speeds I could tap on the gas and it would jump back up. Of course, because I was lazy the car is now parked for the night as a shopping center. It wont start at all now. When it does it idles fine and drives fine, but it cuts out entirely. It doesn't hesitate when it dies. Basiclly it's like someone is unplugging it randomally. and now constantly. I've been told to check the Fuel Pump relay, but without a manual and little direction, I can't locate it in and of the locations I would expect it. The thing is, the check engine light does not come on at all, should I rule out sensors entirely? Should I just tow it to the dealer? Whatcha think? |
| Answer: | Danny, Your problem does sound evident of a fuel problem. It may be as simple as clogged fuel filter. That is located on the passenger side, attached to your firewall. It is possible that your fuel pump is on it's last leg. Usually, your check engine light will only come on when a sensor detects a problem. If your car thinks it's running too lean (too much air, not enough fuel), you will experience what's known as "fuel cut". If you're driving and you get fuel cut, it'll feel like you slam on the brakes. Your engine does that on purpose to keep itself from destroying itself. Otherwise, you may get detenation in your engine. It sounds bad because it is. Your car's computer may also be having some problems. Built into your car is a rev limiter to keep you from red-lining. If your computer is malfuncting, than it may be tripping your rev limiter at much lower RPMs than normal. If you want to save a lot of hassle, and you have a few bucks, have
the car towed to the dealership for their diagnosis and repair. |
