Subject: Talon Acceleration/Timing
Question: I have a 1990 eagle talon awd turbo.I have recently reset all the timing marks and put all the belts on.Now I have to press the gas full trottle to crank it and after it cranks the rpm doesnt exceed 3000.Where should I start?
Answer: Charles,
It sounds like your timing is retarding for some reason. Typically, this can happen if your MAS is failing, or even if you have a vacuum leak somewhere in your system. Your knock senor could be malfuctioning as well. If that is detecting any knock, or it "thinks" it is hearing a knock, your timing will be retarded. Make sure your spark plug wires are secured. You should be idling at around 800 RPM at normal operating temp. Also check and make sure your accelerator cable isn't stuck or loose.

If everything looks fine, and you've checked every component by the book, you may have a more underlying problem. Read this article for more info:

If your ECU is malfunctioning, it will cause a lot of mysterious problems. I have gotten other questions that dealt with strange engine problems after a regular maintenance service was performed. Your ECU is more than 13 years old now, and you should at least open it up and inspect it. You will know by sight and even smell if your ECU is fried.
Good luck!
