| Subject: | the gear shift stick is not moving |
| Question: | hi, I have recently bought a mitsubishi eclipse 1991 model. I got it pretty cheap as it had problems with transimission. Its fourth gear slips. So I have to drive it on 1-2-3-5. Recently, I found problem in moving the stick. Sticks used to become pretty hard sometimes. But I assumed that this problem is from the clutch as when I used to press the clutch very hard or keeps on padding clutch many times before putting the car on to gear, it used to move smoothly. I was about to took it to the workshop but few days back, its foot clutch became totally lose and I cant shift the gear. I got this car for $500 and I dont want to spend much on it. Please give me any suggestions. If its a problem with clutch, I can handle in repairing it but for transmission i think i wont be able to afford. thanks, Narendra |
| Answer: | Narenda, Your problem may be with your slave clutch cylinder. It may be leaking clutch fluid and now it is very spongy. Make sure you have enough clutch fluid. Another problem may be a lack of transmission fluid. If you replace your clutch, refill your tranny with with some high-quality synthetic transmission fluid. That will help smooth out some hard shifts. I doubt you need a new transmission, but if you did, it would probably run you about $800. Good luck! |
