Subject: hard cold start
Question: Good afternoon
i have a 91' eclipse, 1.8 reg model..stick shift. It takes about 6 or 7 times for my car to start. It just started this over the memorial holiday. Please keep in mind, i changed the plugs, wires, fuel filter, air filter and vacumm duct from the air filter to the choke, and its still doing the same thing. If it sits for about 4 hrs then i have problems starting the car. But once i'm driving it, its fine. I also had the battery and alternator tested, and autozone said they were fine. But when its warm it starts on the first try. Thanks for the help

Answer: Freddie,
Your problem may be with your starter. You may just need to tighten the cables on your starter. When your engine is cold, the metal connectors may loose some contact. As you try to start it, a lot of current flows and slowly heats up the metal contacts. As the metal heats, it expands and can make a better connection.

I would suggest having your starter inspected. That is much harder for the AutoZone guys to get to. You may need to take it to a regualr mechanic inspect. Also get a second opinion on your battery and alternator. AutoZone usually does a good job, but I have known them to give inaccurate readings some times. If your starter is determined to be fine, you may want to have your car's computer inspected. Read this article for more information:

Have your ECU inspected and examined for possible failure.
Good luck!
