Subject: engine trouble
Question: 95 Mitsubishi Eclipse, 2.0L, 5 speed, GS
I am having trouble with my car mis-firing. The only thing that I have figured out is that around one of the spark plugs there is a ton of oil, and it is all around the top side. When you take the spark plug out, it is also all on the bottom side. I have been told that it is possibly a busted ring or the valve cover gasket is leaking. Also, I don't know if it has anything to do with it, but when the car sits still it smokes. Just wanted your opinion.
Thank you,
Justin Bowman
Answer: Justin,
Worn piston rings, a leaking valve cover gasket, and worn seals on your valve train will definately cause oil build up in your spark plug wells.

You mentioned that your car smokes when it sits still, but I'm guessing, it is also smoking when it's moving. The only difference is that when you're moving, that smoke is probably exiting through your exhaust system.

You may be looking at an engine rebuild depending on the extent of damage you have to your engine. It's possible that your timing belt failed at some point. When your timing is off with your engine, it can cause a lot of engine damage. Have your engine inspected by a qualified technician.
Good luck!
