Hello there. I need to have my AC fixed, is this a swap I can make on my own? THe shop quoted me $681 for the compressor $68 for the expansion belt labor totaling $950. Next, I thought since my car now has 140k in milage that I should consider changing the timing belt. I don't remenber if it was changed before. Should my timing belt at 140k be change "just to be safe"? I heard if these timing belts break it could ruin the engine. True? Thanks in advance. LM |
| Answer: | Louie, If it's been over 60,000 miles since your last timing belt replacement, it's a good idea to do it. And you are correct, if the timing belt snapped while you're driving, there's a good chance you will ruin the engine. Replacing the compressor is not an easy task. In some cases, it's necessary
to lift the engine to be able to access. I would not recommend doing it
yourself. $681 is the cost of a new OEM compressor. The labor price, however,
seems quite expensive. On average, most mechanics charge roughly $75-90
per hour. This is usually highest at the dealership. You may want to get
a second estimate. |
