| Subject: | Drive Shaft Removal |
| Question: | I'm replacing the clutch in my 98 Eclipse and I have everything ready to go except the removal of the drive shafts. I can't see any bolts to remove the front driveshafts from the transmission? I have a Chilton repair manual and its not helpful at all. I don't want to pull on the driveshafts without knowing that I won't damage them or the transmission. The diagram shows a carter pin holding the shaft in the transmission but that would mean I'd have to dismantle the transmission and I know this can't be the case. Can you please give me some insight on how to properly detach the drive shafts from the manual transmission without damaging any of the components? Thank you in advance for your help. |
| Answer: | Mike, Replacing your clutch will probably one of the most labor intensive jobs you'll ever do on your car. I have not done a clutch removal/installation on your model of Eclipse; only a '90 and '93 GSX. A Chilton's or Haynes manual is no comparison to the actual factory service manual. In order for me to replace the clutch on my Eclipse (90 GSX), I had to drop the tranny itself. I'm not sure if this is the case with yours, and I'd hate to give you the wrong advise if you didn't have to do that. The procedure I took was to detach the steering knuckle, remove the hub, and then slide out the driveshaft. Well, the driveshaft didn't just "slide" out; it required lots of constant pressure and some manuvering. I have heard of some using a gear puller if the spline is really stuck in there. A couple crucial things to be careful of when removing the driveshafts on any model are the inner CV boots and the oil seals. I know I couldn't give much advise, but there are lots of messages boards out there can give you further instruction and guidence. Good luck! |
