| Subject: | ~90 eclipse turbo stumbles on accelleration |
| Question: | I have a 90 GSX 2.0L turbo 5-speed that stumbles on acceleration sometimes. I haven't noticed the tach jumping, the car just loses power. Shifting down, or using the clutch to raise rpms makes it go away for now, but the car has 150K miles on it. Plugs are new. no dash warning lights. Thanks! |
| Answer: | Jeff, If you replaced your plugs, you should be sure to replace your spark plug wires as well. Your wires should be replaced every 30k miles or so. They loose conductivity quickly due to all the heat that your engine produces. You should also replace your PCV valve. Its a very easy and inexpensive item to replace. You should replace it least once per year. If you can pump gas, you can replace it. A more notorious problem could be your turbo. If you still have the orignial turbo on your car, congrats! Very few people that own 1G Eclipses can go this long with the OEM turbo. Your turbine and/or shaft on your turbo may have too much wobble or play. When that begins to wobble, you pretty much have no choice than to replace your turbo. You can test for shaft play by taking off the big tube that goes from your air filter to your turbo. Then, with your finger (MAKE SURE THE CAR ENGINE IS COLD), feel for the shaft. It has a lot of little fins on it like a jet engine. It should spin freely. If you can wiggle that shaft around with minor effort, than your turbo has basically worn out. This is also a good time to inspect if you have any dented, chipped or broken fins. Another common problem with the 1G turbo Eclipses is that the exhaust manifold would develope cracks due to the intense heat. If you have cracks, you'll loose a lot of acceleration. Though these are seemingly a lot of different problems, you probably will not see a check engine light for any of them. Hope this gave you some ideas. Good luck! |
