| Question: | I have a 1st gen 90
Eclipse GSX but unfortunately I skipped a couple cam gears and bent my valves.
My question is do you know where I can get a JDM 4G63 for under $800.- ?
Also, what basic mods do you recommend for optimal performance? Currently
I have a Joe P manual boost controller, MagnaFlow 2 1/2 downpipe, highflow
cat, cat back, MSD 8.5mm, Centerforce Dual Friction Clutch, K&N filter
w/ chopped box, 2nd gen intake elbow, home made intercooler sprayer, Denso
Iridiums. Thank you for your time. PS. I read somewhere that 1st gen block with 2nd gen head is the ideal swap. What's your input? |
| Answer: | Jeff, I'm sorry to hear about your engine. I have fears of snapping my timing belt (again) on my 90 GSX. Finding a JDM Cyclone 4G63 for $800 is gonna be tough. I've seen from $1200-$2000, but for under $800 would be great. You can check out the DSM members pages and ask around if anyone is selling them. Here's a few sites you can check out: www.dsm.org, www.dsmtalk.com, or even www.vfaq.com. There may be someone on there that lead you to a good price on an engine. Stick with the 1G head with the 1G block. I haven't heard of any signifigant
gains with a 2G head swap. Just seems like more headaches. Lots of DSMers
I know that own 2G models will love a 1G in there car. 1Gs don't have
as many cosmetic upgrades as the 2Gs, but the 1G engines are much better.
There are a few more mods you can try with the 1G engine. Get a new exhaust
manifold. If you can find a 2G exhaust manny, that would be an ideal swap.
The 1G mannys are more strictive and are known for cracking. Get a 2G
MAS for your K&N filter. They allow for better air flow. An 2.5"
upper intercooler pipe will help as well. Put a catch can on your PCV
valve hose instead of having it route into your intake manny. Get a breather
filter for your the breather hose going from your valve cover to your
MAS to turbo tube. These mods will prevent your intercooler from building
up an oily film and reducing your performance. If you really want a lot
more boost, go for a "Big" 16G turbo. That can easily add another
20-50 bhp. |
