Subject: Overheating
Question: I have a 1998 Mitsubishi Eclipse LS (not turbo), manual transmission and the temperature gauge was showing the engine was overheating. I had the radiator flushed/filled, installed a new radiator hose, thermostat, gasket and radiator cap. But the temperature gauge still shows the engine is running hot. What else could be checked?
Thanks
Answer: Daphene,
It is possible your temperature sensor is faulty, but that's rare. You can have it checked by a mechanic if you want to be sure.
It's possible there is air trapped in your coolent system. If that occurs, your coolent will not get pressurized enough to cool off your engine. You may want to have your water pump checked. If you have over 60k miles on your car, you may need to replace it. Your belts should be replaced as well.
You should also check your oil level. If its low or very dirty, it'll allow too much friction to build up, which could lead to an overheating engine. You should be using a 10W-30 oil. During your next oil changed, have your PCV valve changed as well.
Good luck!
