| Subject: | idle controller motor |
| Question: | I have a 1992 Mitsubishi Eclpise GS, DOHC, standard shift. I bought it used recently, and that was a big mistake. Had to put new brakes on it, replace all 4 tires, and now I need to get it to pass emissions testing. I had a diagnostic done, and they told me it needs a new catalytic converter and idle time controller motor. Some guy at a local shop said to order this idle time controller motor part direct from Mitsubishi costs $360, and can only be ordered direct from them. Any idea how to get it for cheaper than that? If I knew where to look for it, would I be able to find one in a junk yard and replace it myself? I don't have access to a lift. Thanks for any advice you can offer! |
| Answer: | Alexey, In some places, you can only order parts direct from Mitsubishi. I think your mechanic was referring to the Idle Speed Control motor (sometimes called the Idle Air Control motor). Those will cost around $360 from Mitsubishi. But I have heard of others being able to find those parts online. I have also heard of some being able to buy those at auto parts stores like Auto Zone, Advanced Auto, Pepboys, etc. They may not carry it in the store, but they may be able to order it for you. I'd call around to local auto parts stores to check. You may be able to buy that part for under $200. You defiantely would not need a lift to replace this. Its located directly
below the throttle body elbow on your car. Its relatively easy to get
to with only a few tools.
